As an enthusiastic participant in Hong Kong’s ICT industry, I have been privileged to observe its wonderful evolution across a very significant period of time during which hardly anyone has been untouched by business and personal transformation in communications and commerce.
As Chairman of the Communications Association of Hong Kong (CAHK), I am pleased to reaffirm our support of the Hong Kong International Computer Conference, now in its 35th year. As always, the HKICC brings tremendous value to a wide spectrum of industry and consumer segments, serving as a venue for connecting ICT professionals, business executives and many other industry experts from Hong Kong, Mainland China and overseas, to share insights and new knowledge. CAHK is proud to be a part of this global dynamic, helping to bring about new business opportunities and enhance productivity.
While the pace of innovation and change has always been rapid when it comes to ICT, lately it appears especially so, and thus it is fitting this year’s conference theme is “ICT in a Volatile Economy — Creating Opportunities and Managing Risks.” We at CAHK have also been mindful of the global environment and concur that with volatility comes opportunity. Historically, ICT has always played a key role in enabling adaption to change. For example, cloud and mobility are just two of many emerging developments with incredible potential.
Yet the most important aspect of uncovering opportunity is the human element, and all successes ultimately require collaboration between multiple parties. HKICC 2012 will be the “carrier signal” this year to facilitate these introductions and collaborations, and from myself and on behalf of CAHK, we wish great success for this year’s conference and look forward to meeting many of you.

Computer and Information Technologies (CIT) have been a fundamental driving force that not only fuels the global knowledge-based economy of the world, but also transforms the society in a myriad of ways and empowers individuals to shape their own future and for the benefit of mankind. Propelled by this driving force, opportunities abound in the field and huge progress has been achieved in the past in turning the opportunities into real benefits in daily lives.
On the other hand, there are plenty of challenges faced by the CIT community in utilizing the technologies innovatively in emerging practical applications, as well as pushing the knowledge frontier for advancing the technologies. In this regard, professional societies have a vital role to play in bringing together various parties of the CIT community to address these challenges.
Since establishment, Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS) has actively contributed to ICT professional development in Hong Kong. Being an annual event organized by HKCS, for decades, Hong Kong International Computer Conference (HKICC) has provided an excellent platform for CIT executives, researchers, practitioners, educators and others to exchange insights and innovations, thereby enabling the CIT community to better address the challenges ahead.
On behalf of IEEE Hong Kong Section Computer Chapter, I would like to thank HKCS greatly for its organization of such an important event for the society. I also look forward to another year of great success of HKICC and wish all participants enjoy a rewarding experience at the conference!
