Dr. Hubert CHAN
Chairman, Communication Association of Hong Kong

On behalf of CAHK, it’s my great pleasure to congratulate Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS) on hosting the Hong Kong International Computer Conference (HKICC) this year with the topical theme ‘IT Challenges in a Caring and Digitally Connected Society’.

Organising HKICC is one of the prominent ways to provide a platform for the IT professionals from various regions to present their latest research as well as to discuss and share their experience. In doing so, business opportunities are explored through the close combination with technology; success and insights are shared through heated discussions. Furthermore, since the adoption of ‘dual location concept’ in 1994, the twin sessions held in Hong Kong and one big city in Mainland China have successfully promoted experience and knowledge sharing between IT professionals in Hong Kong and those in Mainland China.

I believe HKICC will be a great success based on HKCS’s rich experience and strong faith; and I wish HKCS will achieve another height through HKICC and other events with their goal as always.

Ms. Anna LIN
Chief Executive, GS1 Hong Kong

On behalf of GS1 Hong Kong, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the Hong Kong Computer Society for its great success in organising and hosting this key conference in Hong Kong.

With the rapid globalisation and convergence of communications and technologies, we are now experiencing all the positive benefits of living in a global village and moving towards an “Internet of Things” where virtually everything is connected via the Internet.

As an international city boasting one of the world’s highest mobile phone and broadband Internet subscriber penetration, Hong Kong is at the forefront of information infrastructure development. To ensure that we continue to enjoy the advantages of having the best IT infrastructure, it is essential that we keep pushing forward the technological revolution through collaborative efforts among industry, professional bodies, academia and the government.

The Hong Kong International Computer Conference 2010 (HKICC2010) is a great platform to move the industry forward. The Conference provides a wonderful opportunity for business leaders and professionals to network and share their insights on the growth of the IT industry as well as plan the path towards forging a caring and digital connected society.

In sharing this joyous occasion, I wish HKICC2010 every success and all participants at this conference a most fruitful experience.

Mr. Francis FONG
Chairman, Hong Kong Association of Interactive Marketing

Congratulations to Hong Kong Computer Society for organising such a meaningful event to the ICT Industry - the Hong Kong International Computer Conference 2010 (HKICC2010).

We can’t deny that the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) is now an integral part of the modern knowledge-based society, where information processing, knowledge management and creation are essential features. It is impossible to keep pace with the world’s on-going rapid advancement if one just relies on traditional media tools. Nowadays, Internet is indispensable for marketing and corporate communications, as well as successful product and service marketing.

While IT professionals are enthusiastically devoting themselves in developing innovative products and caring services to pursuit of better living quality, we should simultaneously ensure the new technologies are contributory to the ultimate goal in achieving a more harmonious city, in which more and more citizens, particularly the younger generation and the elderly can actively take part in the progression. Bridging the digital inclusion gap should be deemed as one of our highest priorities while we are deploying ITC projects.

On behalf of Hong Kong Association of Interactive Marketing (HKAIM), we sincerely look forward to another successful HKICC being held by Hong Kong Computer Society in the coming September.

Mr. Herman LAM
Chief Executive Officer, Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited

In building an inclusive, knowledge-based society to support sustainable development, bridging the digital divide issue is a critical step. The issue is not a simple one, nor will it resolve by itself. Unremitting and concerted efforts are required to ensure that no underprivileged segments of the community is left out or left behind by the technological revolution.

The theme of HKICC2010, “IT Challenges in a Caring and Digitally Connected Society”, is both timely and appropriate as Hong Kong undergoes a transition from the traditional economy to the new Internet-driven one.

As one of the anchor organisations of the District Cyber Centres Alliance, which aims to help less privileged members of the community integrate into an increasingly information-based society, Cyberport actualises part of its mission through provision of computer hardware, Internet access, training and education, allowing those deprived of resources to stay in touch with the digitalised society.

With HKICC entering its 33rd year in 2010, I would like to applaud and congratulate the Hong Kong Computer Society for staging such an inspiring and successful annual signature event once again.

Congratulations to Hong Kong Computer Society for organising such a meaningful event to the ICT Industry - the Hong Kong International Computer Conference 2010 (HKICC2010).

Regarding the sounding theme this year “IT Challenges in a Caring and Digitally Connected Society”, the word “caring” reminds me of services related to the elderly and the children. It is always not an effortless task to satisfy all the social needs with the innovative ICT products when the most important element, “active participation” of all shareholders, is still lagging behind the fast development of hardware.

Meanwhile, we shall endeavor to establish a sustainable e-learning environment for our future generation, in order to share the best practice of advancement of education not only regionally, but also internationally.

On behalf of The Hong Kong Information Technology Federation (HKITF), we sincerely look forward to another successful HKICC being held by Hong Kong Computer Society in the coming September.

"The world is flat". In this digitally connected world, there are, in deed, many IT challenges. It is, therefore, timely for the Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS) to choose "IT Challenges in a Caring and Digitally Connected Society" as the theme for this year's Hong Kong International Computer Conference (HKICC2010). I am delighted to see the rich program of the Conference. And I am confident that local and Mainland ICT professionals will benefit much from it.

Congratulation to HKCS for another year of success in organising HKICC2010 and other equally well received events. Keep up the good work.

Mr. Stephen CHAN
President, Hong Kong Logistics Association

It is my honor to deliver this message to celebrate the opening of the Hong Kong International Computer Conference 2010 hosted by the Hong Kong Computer Society.

Hong Kong is a major logistics centre in the region that connects the nearby countries with other continents and reaches nearly half of the world’s population within 5 hours flight time. The geographic advantage makes Hong Kong the preferred logistics and transport hub. Along with the high accessibility, the Hong Kong logistics infrastructure of both the hardware and software plays an important role for performing the place utility.

There are many interpretations of the modern logistics. After all, it must equip with (1) efficient flow of information, (2) proactive and innovative type of services, and (3) integrated process flow and systems. These characteristics contain a substantial portion of information technology capability.

Information technology has long been the must enabler of making the logistics network and supply chain more efficient and cost effective. The high velocity of cargo flow, the short fashion seasons, the international sourcing, the value chain visibility, the globalised logistics and supply chain etc. are the result of adopting e-logistics systems.

With the rapid evolving information technology, logistics industry will continue to grow by making use of the appropriated enablers. It is obvious that information technology forms the critical part of logistics systems. The supply chain and logistics network will not be successful without considering the information technology.

Once again, I wish the conference success and a fruitful exchange and sharing of experiences.

Internet is undoubtedly one of the greatest inventions on earth since last century, and its emergence has put a rocket thrust on the development of computer and information technologies. Nowadays, people are getting connected through one or the other means of information technologies, and communications have never been made easier. The great success of community platforms in recent years, such as Facebook and Twitter, has proved computer and information technologies indeed help promoting communications and enhancing relationships. Today the growth on digital communication is only starting to accelerate. The challenges that ICT industry is facing in playing a role on a caring and digitally connected society well deserves a broad discussion and sharing, and I believe this year HKICC would be a great opportunity to address and facilitate this purpose. We also cooperate in leading a Hong Kong delegation to the annual Asia Pacific Information & Communications Technology Awards (APICTA). This year’s APICTA takes place in October, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

We at the HKTDC are proud of our association with the HKCS and its annual regional conference and look forward to continuing our joint efforts on behalf of this vital industry.

Mr. Eric LUNG
Chairman, IT Service Management Forum Hong Kong Chapter

On behalf of the IT Service Management Forum Hong Kong Chapter, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the Hong Kong Computer Society for the Hong Kong International Computer Conference 2010.

For the last few decades, HKICC has become one of the most important events in the IT industry, bringing together IT professionals and Government leaders around the world to drive the development of the industry and the society.

With the society becoming more and more digitally connected, bringing people closer to each other digitally, people are in fact further apart in face to face contact. The inferior group, which cannot participate in the digital society, becomes marginalised. Doubtless, the theme chosen for the HKICC2010 "IT Challenges in a Caring and Digitally Connected Society" would provide visions, insights and views on how the IT industry could play its roles in filling the digital gap of the society.

Once again, may I wish the Hong Kong International Conference 2010 an event of great success.

Mr. Man LIU
Chairman, The Society of Hong Kong External Telecommunications Services Providers Ltd.

The power of IT can change life; reform society that we have witnessed over the past decades. In the telecommunications industry, VOIP and other communications technologies have been here for only ten years; its applications are widely used, not only to reduce the cost of communication, but also to shorten the distance between people. Friends from overseas can be reached by VOIP video chat within a few seconds which certainly was beyond our imagination 10 years ago.

Although the power of IT is tremendous, the challenges to IT cannot be ignored. The population growth further enhances the dependence on society and many of us will face the challenge of getting or giving the kind of social care such as child care, aged care, health care and environmental care etc. We, as human beings, do not change fundamentally, but IT must. IT must change, must improve, to accommodate billions more people and to answer the challenges of increasing dependence from the society.

Many countries around the World have already invested and have put in resources to build a fuller coverage of fiber-optic network connecting to and in their own countries. They know very clearly that in this information age, the mastery of the information flow could have a decisive influence on the social development and contribute to the economic growth. I understand Hong Kong has its special circumstances that may hinder the building of the fuller coverage of fiber-optic network. However, I am confident that the HKICC2010, with the concerted effort of IT elites, will provide us an insight as well as a complete and feasible direction for the future.

Thank you
