His first job was with Burroughs machines (Cumbernauld, Scotland) and was involved in various processor design projects which included the Burroughs' machines' B80 and B90 ranges of computers. When he was with Burroughs' machines, he invented a reconfigurable memory system. In 1979, he joined International Computers Limited (Manchester, U.K.) and had worked on a number of mainframe computer design projects. He had designed the floating point unit for the ICL 3930 computer and was also involved in a number of VLSI technology study projects. One of these pilot projects was to design a three chip set CPU for the ICL 3900 family.

He joined Chinese University in 1984 and is responsible for the hardware and computer architecture courses. His current interests are Chinese Computing systems, Computer Architecture, reconfigurable computing and bioinformatics systems. He is actively involved in Chinese based computer applications. He is a member of the ISO 10646 working group which defines the Chinese Character code. He has also been involved in a number of RGC (Research Grant Council) Funded projects and two ITF (Industrial Technology Fund) projects. He has published over 80 papers on Microcomputer Systems, Reconfigurable Systems, Bioinformatics and Chinese Computing.
