The Hong Kong Computer Society (HKCS) has signed a

Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Hong

Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) on 20

June 2014. IVE students who are admitted to eligible

Information Technology (IT)-related programs assessed

by HKCS annually are now pre-approved to apply for

HKCS Student Membership. This collaboration of HKCS

with local tertiary institutions first started two years

ago, with the view to cultivating potential young talent

and furthering the development of Information and

Communications Technology (ICT) in Hong Kong.

Mr. Michael Leung, the President of HKCS, was delighted

to establish a partnership with IVE that would cultivate

IT talents and promote professional development. He

pointed out that, “There is a huge demand for IT talents

in Hong Kong to support the knowledge-based economy.

More importantly, information technology is now an

indispensable part of daily life and will be significant

to the future development of human society. Therefore,

HKCS aims to nurture young IT talents, and has been

encouraging them to choose the IT industry as lifelong

career since 1970.’’

The MOU Signing Ceremony was arranged at IVE (Tsing

Yi), co-hosted by Dr. Ong Lay Lian, Academic Director

of IT Discipline of IVE, and Mr. Michael Leung. Mr.

Michael Leung stated that, “From now on, IVE students

admitted to ICT-related programs recognised by HKCS

are pre-approved for application to HKCS Student

Membership which would help students to understand

more of ICT-industry development and even to better

plan their career paths by participating in related ICT

seminars and events. After graduation, they can also

apply for HKCS Associate Membership or Professional

Class (e.g. Full) Membership, based on their academic

qualifications and working experience. As HKCS is a

well established IT professional association in Hong

Kong, its Professional Class Member status represents

respondent ICT professionalism.”

Mr. Michael Leung expects that, ‘’Students will actively

participate in the events held by HKCS throughout the

year to get the most updated information about the IT

industryand cherish the opportunities to exchange views

and experiences with professionals. ‘’ In conclusion, Mr.

Leung also encouraged students that ‘’the annual salary

growth rate and the entry-level salary of university

graduates are both reasonable in the ICT industry,

according to the report released by our society last year.

Young people are naturally drawn to this prospective

industry, as it is full of creativity, dynamically driven, and

crucial to the development of human society.’’
