Charles B Wang is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Computer Associates International, Inc, the world leader in mission-critical business software. With revenue of $5.3 billion in fiscal year 1999, CA employs more than 14,000 people in 100 countries around the world.

Mr Wang (pronounced "Wong") founded CA in 1976, launching the company with three associates, a single product and a simple idea: that technology must serve business. Today, CA software provides the computing foundation for hundreds of thousands of businesses around the world.

Mr Wang combines a strategic business perspective with a hands-on grasp of technology. He also ensures that CA retains its entrepreneurial spark by fostering a supportive culture and a flexible corporate structure.

CA continues to outpace other software providers while setting industry standards in enterprise computing. CA's base strategy the development, acquisition and integration of software-delivers a mission-critical multi-platform infrastructure that exploits new technologies.

A technology visionary with a no-nonsense management style, Mr Wang is actively involved in CA's ongoing research and development efforts. He meets frequently with clients to ensure that CA remains responsive to their needs. Mr Wang pioneered information exchange programs to help chief information officers and chief executive officers better understand the role of technology in their businesses.

Mr Wang is the author of TECHNO VISION II: Every Executive's Guide to Understanding and Mastering Technology and The Internet (McGraw-Hill, 1997), an updated version of TECHNO VISION, which has been translated into seven languages.

Under Mr Wang's leadership, CA continues to lead the industry in such key measures as revenue and profitability per employee. CA was recently selected by Industry Week magazine as one of the world's 100 best-managed manufacturers.

Mr Wang has demonstrated a fervent interest in how computer technology can improve the lives of children and promote closer relationships between people around the world. His support extends to such organizations as the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He also established The Smile Train, an unprecedented medical and technology initiative dedicated to helping children with cleft lips and palates and other facial deformities.

Mr Wang also has endowed $25 million for a high technology Asian American Center at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook, the largest private gift in the history of the SUNY system. The center will be dedicated to the advancement of education, cultural exchanges, business and technology.

In addition, Mr Wang strongly encourages employees to participate in CA's Matching Charitable Gifts Program, under which the company matches 200 percent of each donation of $10 or more to hospitals, community funds, educational and cultural institutions, and social service and environmental organizations.

Mr Wang was born in Shanghai, China in August 1944 and came to the United States with his family in 1952. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Queens College, and began his computer career at Columbia University's Riverside Research Institute, where he started as a programming trainee.
