“The Robocon contest has been hosted every year in

Hong Kong since 2004. Each one of those years has

been received with passion and enthusiasm and this

year was no different,” noted Stephen Lau, Chairman

of the Organising Committee of Robocon 2014 Hong

Kong Contest and Vice President (Executive) of HKCS.

“Robocon offers a platform for students to explore and

demonstrate their creativity and skills in technology

through the challenge of robotics. The event fosters

friendship and promotes an exchange of experience in

engineering and information technologyamong students

from different nations and cultural backgrounds. These

are the future leaders of the 21st century.”

This year’s Robocon 2014 in Hong Kong attracted nine

teams fromsixlocal post-secondaryinstitutes to compete

in the format of a pool match. To bring the central

theme to life, the organisers set up a 12-by-12 metre

game field separated into five child zones including two

see-saw zones, a swing zone, a pole walk zone, and the

jungle gym zone. The contest was separated into several

rounds with a time limit of three minutes. In each round,

two teams had to compete against each other to finish

the “rides” with an autonomous “child robot” assisted

by a manually-controlled “parent robot”. The winning

team in the finals will go on to represent Hong Kong in

competing at the international Robocon contest hosted

by the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) in Pune,

India on 24 August 2014.

After a series of heated rounds and close match-ups,

The War Dragon team from The Hong Kong University

of Science and Technology (HKUST) demonstrated the

greatest engineering finesse and beat first runners up,

The Fiery Dragon team, also from HKUST, in the final.

The War Dragon team therefore captured the title of

Champions at the Robocon 2014 Hong Kong Contest

and will represent Hong Kong at ABU Robocon in India

later this August. SAPIENTIA, from The University of

Hong Kong, took second runner up place.
