ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Mr C Y Lam

Assistant Director

Hong Kong Observatory

Mr C Y Lam is an Assistant Director of the Hong Kong Observatory. He is responsible for the provision of weather forecasting and warning services for the public as well as related scientific development work.

Mr Lam studied physics and mathematics at the University of Hong Kong and meteorology at Imperial College, University of London. He joined the Observatory in 1974 and started his career as a weather forecaster. He was involved with the first attempt at numerical weather prediction at the Observatory in the mid 1970's and has retained an interest in the subject ever since.

Mr Lam has written several papers on local heavy rain events, which illustrate that close monitoring of observations made by satellite, radar and automatic weather stations is a key to effective short-range warning of such events. He is now in charge of a programme to harness affordable computer power to develop a very short-range forecasting system to help forecasters on the bench.

Mr Lam is active in the international meteorological community. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Typhoon Research Co-ordination Group of the ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee.
